Classes consist of cardiovascular aerobic training, strength/endurance training, and improvement of flexibility. Training sessions are one night a week on Fridays from 7:15pm - 8:15pm From the Welland Tribune...
The cardio-type class runs in two sessions a year: the fall session (11 weeks long) starts in September and the spring session starts in January. The idea for the class began when Doug Meather (who runs Northwest Goju Ryu) referred Mrs. Brandy's name to Mary-Lou Ambrose-Little, from the Parks and Recreation for the City of Welland. Ms. Ambrose-Little then approached Mrs. Brandy and asked if she was interested in running a program. Mrs. Brandy said she thought this type of class would be good because "it is a unique program". "The combination of Martial Arts, proper body mechanics, strengthening, conditioning and cardio are all rolled into one."
Her classes run on Friday nights. All ages of youth and adults attend the class and males and femals are welcome she said. Even though she has only seen one male in her class, she encourages more to come out. The best part of the class from a fitness standpoint is the variety of exercises the participants participate in. "There is no routine about it. I change it up all the time. It's never, dull, never the same." Mrs. Brandy said people enjoy her class because it is fun, encouraging, a confidence booster and it provides them with knowledge as she passes on what she learns to her class to educate them. For participants interested in joining the workout, activities that can be expected include: one minute pushups, abdominal training, cardio warm ups, isometric strength training, balance and co-ordination training, kicking and punching techniques, partner work, speed drills and circuit training.
A few things that members can expect after finishing a session with Mrs. Brandy are a noticeable difference physically and emotionally. She adds that their reflexes will improve and they will gain more energy than they had before. She said her main goal is to help people maintain some level of physical conditioning, something she likes to refer to as "the fountain of youth." Mrs. Brandy has been instructing the class since it originated three years ago. She has five years of experience in the Martial Arts (a black belt), three years of cardio training, two years of Tae Kwon Do; she has completed the Can Fit Pro program, the YMCA fitness program and has attended a course (Women in Weights) at Brock University. She also sits on the Sports and Recreation Committee for the City of Welland. She said she encourages anyone to come out and particpate. She's seen people up to the age of 56 in her class and she reassures the class is safe and special mats are laid on the floor to ensure there are no injuries. "People like that I push them past their (perceived) limits - it makes them realize they can do more (physically) than they thought." Home Shin Gan Karate Events
